Brown Bread is a stalwart in the Irish diet for centuries. Who doesn’t love brown bread, especially the homemade batch. Whether it is with soup, the fry or just simply with a cup of tea, brown bread must be a favourite of many people.
Baking the damn thing can be tricky, it is an art in itself and one Laois woman is a master of that art and is displaying her brown bread baking qualities on the national stage.
Vivienne Rigley, Ballickmoyler, is Laois’ representative in the National Brown Bread Baking Competition.
The nationwide competition which is sponsored by Aldi and run in association with the National Ploughing Association and the Irish Countrywomen’s Association. Laois woman and NPA director Anna-May McHugh is involved in the running of the competition.
The quarter finals took place in An Grianán in Louth last Thursday where Vivienne managed to bake her way into the next round. The semis will take place on the Tuesday and Wednesday at the Ploughing.
Vivienne will be baking at the Aldi marquee where she will be hoping to be one of four picked for the final which will take place on the final day of the National Ploughing Championships.
The winner of the competition will win a lucrative deal which will see their bread on sale in Aldi stores for a minimum of six months and will get a share of the profits which is a guaranteed €10,000.
We would like to say the best of luck to Vivienne from us here at LaoisToday.ie and anyone who will be heading to the National Ploughing Championships please call into the Aldi marquee and give her your support.
