1 – Portlaoise man named as victim of drowning tragedy at popular lake on Saturday
Michael Timmons has been named as the man who died tragically in a drowning incident at Derryounce Lake in Portarlington last Saturday.
Mr Timmons was aged in his early 60s and from Portlaoise.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 3.30pm last Saturday.
2 – 16 young players to watch out for as the 2022 Laois SFC is set to get underway
With the 2022 Laois SFC set to get underway last Thursday evening, we set about picking the young players we reckoned will feature brightly this year.
There were a total of eight games on the opening week – one Thursday, two on Friday, three on Saturday and two on Sunday.
The action began on Wednesday as Killeshin took on O’Dempsey’s in O’Moore Park.
3 – Rathdowney-Erill blow Portlaoise out of the park to make winning start to Premier Intermediate campaign
Rathdowney-Erill finished impressive 13 point winners over Portlaoise in Trumera last Saturday.
Rathdowney-Erill’s second team never looked troubled throughout this game as they led from the opening minute right until the last.
Rathdowney-Errill were on top all over the pitch but the biggest performances came from Dan Bowe who was in control of the game at centre back, Padraig Rafter and David Poyton who dominated midfield and Scott Pearson at half-forward.
4 – Rathdowney-Errill continue good 2022 form as they ease past Rosenallis in SHC Round 1
There was just a point between them when they met in the quarter finals last year – but Rathdowney-Errill were comprehensive winners this time around.
The Round 1 clash between the league champions and Rosenallis was over as a contest after 20 minutes.
By that stage, a rampant Rathdowney-Errill had built up a 13 point lead and there was simply no way back for Rosenallis.
5 – County champions Clough-Ballacolla off to a flyer as they dispatch Castletown in Round 1
County champions Clough-Ballacolla began their quest for three in a row with a routine victory over Castletown in Round 1.
With Stephen Maher on flawless form in front of goals, they had far too much for their opponents in a 19 point victory.
The first quarter was relatively even but Clough-Ballacolla began to pull away after Cillian Dunne’s goal.
6 – Gardai arrest two and charge with 16 offences following robbery in Laois town
Gardai in Laois arrested two people following a burgarly that occurred in Portarlington.
The arrests were made on Thursday July 14 and the two were charged with 16 separate offences.
These were all charged under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
7 – Stage times revealed for Forest Fest in Emo next weekend
The stage times were announced for Forest Fest, a new three-day music festival in Emo taking place this week, July 22-24.
With over 50 acts on the bill Forest Fest boasts one of the best line-ups of any musical event in the country this year.
The running order from 5pm on Friday until midnight on Sunday, will see bands gracing the stage in the sunny surrounds of Emo, the forest canopy of Emo Court woods providing the perfect backdrop.
8 – In Pictures: A selection of great photos as Laois senior hurling championship gets underway
After weeks of build-up and an exciting Division 1 league campaign, the Senior Hurling championship got underway.
Four matches took place with two in each group and while the results went the way they were expected to go, there were some entertaining affairs.

9 – 10 clubs represented on first Hurling Team of the Week for 2022
Following an exciting first round of action in the Senior, Premier Intermediate and Intermediate championships, our first Hurling Team of the Week for 2022 was announced.
We had 12 games across the three competitions and there were a number of fine performances.
We whittled all them down to 15 players for our first selection of the 2022 season.
10 – Laois’s newest millionaire comes forward to claim life changing €1 million prize
There was great buzz in and around Portlaoise as a Daily Million player came forward to claim their top prize of €1 million from a Sunday 2pm draw.
The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold at the Laois Shopping Centre, in Tesco, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.
The Laois winner has officially become the 22nd National Lottery millionaire of 2022 following their weekend top prize win.
