Michael Timmons has been named as the man who died tragically in a drowning incident at Derryounce Lake in Portarlington on Saturday.
Mr Timmons was aged in his early 60s and from Portlaoise.
Mr Timmons, who was single, is survived by a number of family members. Funeral details are yet to be announced.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 3.30pm on Saturday.
The victim was taken from the water and removed from the scene by ambulance to Portlaoise General Hospital.
He was pronounced dead a short time later. Gardaí said they are treating the matter as a tragic accident.
Derryounce Lake is a local beauty spot run by the Portarlington Community Development Association.
Though some of the walking routes are in Laois, the man-made lake in the former bog owned by Bord na Móna, is in Offaly.
The amenity attracts thousands of visitors every year and is particularly busy in the warm weather.
