There have been calls for safety works to be carried out on a section of the N80.
On Friday June 18, two vehicles were involved in a collision on the Portlaoise side of Mountmellick.
Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured but the issue came before yesterday’s meeting of the Borris-In-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District.
Fianna Fail Councillor Paddy Bracken, who lives in Mountmellick, called on the Council to increase safety measures at the location.
He said: “We had a very serious incident there last month on the N80 and safety measures are certainly needed.
“It is deadly dangerous and we are very lucky that somebody wasn’t killed.
“I am calling on the Council to urgently look at this stretch of road and see how we can make it safer.”
Agreeing with Cllr Bracken, Independent Councillor James Kelly explained how he often uses the road under the Derrycloney Bridge to avoid traffic in the town.
He said: “That road is dangerous and the junction with the N80 is similarly so.
“I and others use the road under the Derrycloney Bridge to avoid traffic in the town.
“So I certainly agree with Cllr Bracken that more needs to be done to make that section of the road safer.”
