Two of the many QQI Level 5 courses offered at Portlaoise Institute include Engineering Technology and Computer Science.
These STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) courses are at the heart of a very wide variety of jobs and professions.
Studying either of these courses at Portlaoise Institute will give you the skills you need to take part in building the world of our future.
The overall aim of our one-year Computer Science programme is to introduce students to the areas of software, database and web development. It is aimed at students of Leaving Certificate standard and leads to a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Software Development.
The Computer Science Course consists of the following modules: Computer Programming, Software Architecture, Programming Design Principles, Teamworking, Work Experience, Database Methods, Web Authoring and Mathematics
Deputy Principal Keith McClearn stated that “even with Covid 19, The ICT sector is booming at the moment, as a result there is a shortage of Computer Science graduates in Ireland”.
“Our Computer Science course serves as an excellent springboard to a qualification and a career in the IT sector,” he added.
“Also some of our graduates have progressed to study for Level 8 Degrees in Computer Games Development, Software Development, Cybercrime and IT Security.”
Our one year pre-engineering course aims to equip students with the necessary practical an theoretical skills needed for employment in the engineering industry or as a foundation for students who wish to pursue further studies in electronic or mechanical engineering in a Third Level Institution.
Areas of study include: Engineering Workshop Processes, Engineering Workshop Theory, Computer Aided Design, Customer Service, Mathematics, Work Experience, Materials Science and Safety & Health at Work.
Course Coodinatior, Jane Doherty outlined that “the emphasis of our Engineering course is two-fold, the course is a preparation for direct employment in an engineering industry and it will provide students with a solid foundation to study an engineering course at third level”.
