A meeting is to be sought by a delegation of Laois and Carlow County Councillors with the Chief Superintendent in Carlow over issues relating to policing on the Laois/Carlow border areas.
The problem came to light at this morning’s joint meeting of the Carlow Municipal District and the Graiguecullen/Portarlington Municipal District.
Fine Gael Councillor Aisling Moran gave details of an incident on the Sleaty Road, Graiguecullen, where the injured party had to wait an hour and a half for Gardai to come from the Abbeyleix station.
She said: “I know of an incident a few months ago where a car was trampled over by a sulky driver,
“They phoned Carlow Garda station but were told the Sleaty Road was outside of their jurisdiction and to ring Laois.
“Abbeyleix Gardai are designated and at the time, their squad car was attending an incident in Rathdowney so it took them 90 minutes to get to where this happened.
“While it surely would not have taken more than ten minutes for Carlow Gardai to provide assistance.”
Fianna Fail Cllr in Carlow, Ken Murnane, said that he regularly sees Gardai in Graiguecullen itself and that their work there should be noted.
Fine Gael’s Tom O’Neill, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, said that he would write to the Superintendent in Carlow to see if a plan on how to deal with incidents such as the one Cllr Moran outlined could be facilitated.
