Around 3,500 homes in the Rathdowney area are without water this morning.
Irish Water says homes in the Rathdowney and Galmoy areas lost their supply following a problem with a pump in the Galmoy treatment plant.
It’s expected that the issue will be resolved by midday today, when supply will begin to be restored.
In the meantime, water can be collected from Johnstown National School but people are being advised to boil it before use, as a precaution.
A statement from the national water utility said: “Irish Water regrets that due a mechanical failure of a pump at the Galmoy Water Treatment Plant that customers in Galmoy and Rathdowney in Co. Laois are currently without water. Approximately 3,500 customers will be affected by this outage.
“The pump is currently being worked on and is now expected to be resolved by 12 noon (Monday) when supply will begin to be restored.
“In order to address the temporary shortage a standing pipe will be available at the Johnstown National School in Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny from 9am on Monday morning until 8pm,” the statement said.

Irish Water also reminded people to bring clean containers and to boil water taken from these stations before use, as a precaution.
“Irish Water apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused and thanks them for their patience while crews work to repair the pump,” its statement added.
