The Transition Year group in Mountrath CS enjoyed the Laois Sports Partnership Leadership Programme recently.
These programmes equip young people with employability skills for life – improving motivation, self esteem, communication, team work and confidence.
PE Teacher Chris Coughlan said that it’s a great initiative for any school to give the students an opportunity to become leaders.
He added that many of the students want to become involved in motivating, coaching and mentoring the younger teams in the school.
Ms Mary Gannon, the TY coordinator, said that the skills they learn can be applied to a variety of sports, as well as their personal development.
There are a number of skills. Students learn to plan, lead and review an activity; develop leadership skills; leading activities that promote a healthy lifestyle; fair play in sport; the role of the official and the many opportunities in sport and recreation.
Student Glen Connolly said that it was a really useful day, as many of the students are members of school teams.
Student Laura Phelan said that understanding and leading a healthy lifestyle is really important and people are more health conscious concerning their exercise and diet.
