There has been nine new Coronavirus death reported today – meaning 1,763 is the death toll in Ireland now.
Many of these deaths occurred over the last week and were just notified to the Department of Health today. The average death remains about one per day.
While there has been a total of seven new cases of Coronavirus have been diagnosed in Ireland today.
That means there is now a total of 25,826 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.
Tanaiste calls for schools to repopen
Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says that schools must reopen in September.
Speaking during Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil, Leo Varadkar said many European countries were worse affected by Covid-19 than Ireland, but they did not close their schools fully.
“It is essential, provided that the virus stays suppressed, that schools open and that parents have that assurance.
“And that children get back to education and get back to their social and educational development, which is so crucial.”
A plan is to be put in place in the coming days.
