1,738 people have now died from Coronavirus in Ireland – with three new deaths reported today.
While there has been a total of six new cases of Coronavirus have been diagnosed in Ireland today.
That means there is now a total of 25,477 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.
Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “The National Public Health Emergency Team continues to advise against all non-essential travel.
“The WHO has warned that the global pandemic is accelerating. In the past week, over 160,000 cases have been reported each day.
“The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again tomorrow (Thursday 2nd July) as it continues to monitor the spread of COVID-19 nationally and internationally, and review Ireland’s response and preparedness to the disease.”
Dr. Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “In June, a total of 31 cases of COVID-19 in Ireland were associated with travel.
“The balance of keeping the disease suppressed in Ireland will continue to be challenging as society and business reopens. Public Health Advice remains available on gov.ie/health and hse.ie.”
Number of people who contracted virus abroad and died revealed
Covid-19 has killed five people who caught the virus abroad and became seriously ill after returning with the infection, new figures revealed.
The fatalities have been revealed for the first time.
It follows an appeal by chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan to people who have booked summer holidays, to cancel the trips due to the risk of catching Covid-19, and spreading it to families and the wider community.
Calls for refunds for holiday makes
The Consumer Association of Ireland has said that the Government needs to intervene and offer guidance to airlines and ensure that a fund is in place to refund holidaymakers who cancel their bookings during the Covid-19 outbreak.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Sarah McInerney programme, CAI Chief Executive Dermot Jewell said that advice about international travel needs to be issued from the Department of Foreign Affairs as “consumers are the weak link” in the priorities looked at to date.
He said that the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan’s plea to consumers not to travel “has been heard and has put individuals who have paid in advance out of pocket”.
