A road between Portlaoise and Mountrath has been completely closed this evening following a serious accident.
Members of the fire services, multiple ambulances and garda cars are currently on the scene.
AA Roadwatch have confirmed that a collision has taken place on the Mountrath Road going out of Portlaoise towards the motorway.
They say: “The Old N7 (R445) is closed between Portlaoise and Mountrath just off the M7 at J18 Portlaoise West due to a collision.
“Gardai are at the scene.”
An eyewitness reported huge tailbacks are in the area.
They said: “The accident seems to have taken place as you come off the Motorway on the way to Mountrath.
“I’ve been at a complete standstill now for 20 minutes and can see several strands of the emergency services there.
“Hopefully nobody has been seriously hurt.”
It is unclear at this stage if anyone has been hurt.
