Rathdowney is set to have a new Lord Mayor for the first time in 30 years.
Five locals have put themselves forward to contest the position which has been vacant for the last three decades.
The Rathdowney Events Committee hopes to raise funding by rejuvenating the role. This is the latest initiative the group have come up with since reforming earlier this year.
The first person to hold the title of Lord Mayor was Pat Phelan in 1981.
Since then, the chain of office has been worn by Larry Dunne, Shiela Bracken, Betty O’Brien and Johnny Brophy – who all represented Rathdowney in a great light and made the people very proud.
But the position has been vacant since 1987 until now.
This year’s candidates are Arthur Konopka from Errill Snooker Club, Julianne Lupton from Rathdowney Macra Club, Michelle Walton from Rossmore Tug-O-War, Pauline Gill from Rathdowney Events Committee and Michael Cleere from Rathdowney-Errill GAA.
All five have been given sponsorship cards and the winner will receive 50% of the funds for their organisation.
A face-the-public fun question and answer session will take place in on Friday July 7 in Ray’s Bar at 9.30pm involving all candidates.
There will also be a display of memorabilia from previous elections while refreshments will be provided with music on the night coming from Tim Chambers.
The Event Committee are encouraging as many people as possible to come along and enjoy what promises to be a great evening.
