Portlaoise Spotlight Sessions present: ‘Open Mic Originals’ – a celebration of original voices

Portlaoise Spotlight Sessions is set to present ‘Open Mic Originals’, a free monthly event dedicated to original music and spoken word.

The call has been put out to all singers, songwriters, poets and creatives wishing to take part in this FREE event.

Open Mic Originals will be held in the Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise, beginning at 7pm and taking place on Thursday, April 24, Thursday, May 29, and Thursday, June 26.

Whether you’re new to the scene with just one piece to your name, or a seasoned performer with years of writing behind you, this is your stage.

Open Mic Originals invites artists of all ages and styles to come and share their work in a welcoming, relaxed and supportive environment.

Try out your latest song or poem, meet fellow creatives, gather feedback, get tips, form bands, and be part of a growing community of original voices. Whether you’re here to perform or just to soak up the atmosphere, all are welcome.

The Spotlight Sessions is a celebration of creativity and individuality. It is open to all artists, regardless of experience.

Unlike traditional open mics, The Spotlight Sessions is strictly focused on original material. Covers are not permitted — this is a stage for authenticity, self-expression, and storytelling straight from the hearts of local creatives.

All ages and styles are welcome, and a professional sound and lighting setup will ensure your work gets the treatment it deserves.

Paul Dermody, one of the co-founders of The Spotlight Sessions, said: “The goal is simple, we want to provide a safe and encouraging space for artists who might not have another outlet to share their work.

“Whether you’re looking to get feedback, connect with fellow creatives, or simply take that brave first step into the spotlight — this is your home. Join us for three special nights of creativity, connection, and inspiration.”

Another co-founder, Dagogo Hart, said: “It is more than just an open mic night—it’s a celebration of voices, a platform where stories are shared with music and poetry, that’s the reason we want to hear original work.

“It’s where artists from all walks of life connect, express their truths, and ignite conversations that matter. Every performance, whether by seasoned poets or first-timers, adds a unique layer to our growing artistic community here in Portlaoise.”
