St Abban’s AC will host the 50th Annual Student Games in Monavea on Good Friday, April 18, at 5pm.
The competition has been running for 50 years and provides student with the opportunity to represent their schools across a range of sprints, long distance races, throw events and jumps events.
Traditionally, Killeshin had dominated the competition but with a re-organisation of the teams in recent years the title has moved around more regularly.
Athletes can compete from U-7 all the way up to U-15, accommodating athletes born between 2011 and 2019.
The news comes on the back of a triumphant weekend for the club in Kilkenny.
A number of St Abban’s athletes competed in the Ferrybank Open Sports where the club were crowned best overall club on the day.
Each athlete involved contributed to their club’s overall points throughout the event.
IUAA Indoor Track and Field Championships
A selection of St Abban’s athletes were in action at the Irish University Athletics Association (IUAA) Track and Field Championships in Santry, Dublin, where they were proudly representing their colleges.
Field events were the order of the day for St Abban’s athletes, who were competing across Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, Hammer and Weight For Distance.
Two club athletes took home medals, with Aoibheann McDonald winning silver and Lucy Fitzgerald winning bronze.
McDonald represented UCD in the Pole Vault where her vault of 2.85m was good enough for second place.
Fitzgerald was in action in the Triple Jump where her leap of 11.21m saw her claim a bronze medal for UCC.
Fitzgerald also lined out in the Long Jump, where she faced off against her sister Grace who was representing UCD.
Also in the Triple Jump was Katie Baldwin, representing DCU, who finished just outside the medals with her 10.27m good enough for fifth place.
Ger Kelly was in great throwing form in the Hammer where his best throw of 43.90m was a new personal best and saw him finish in fifth place.
In the Men’s Weight for Distance the SETU athlete went one place better with a throw of 7.56m good enough for fourth place.
