1916 Easter Rising Commemorations to be held across Laois

The 109th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising will be celebrated this weekend with Commemorations being held around Laois.

Events in Mountmellick and The Heath, both taking place on Sunday, April 20, will pay homage to one of the most important day’s in Ireland’s history.

At 1pm, the Sinn Féin Cumann in Mountmellick will “remember Ireland’s patriot dead,” with all welcome to attend.

Assembly is in O’Connor Square with attendees parading to the Monument on Wolfe Tone Street.

Anyone attending the event is encouraged to wear an Easter lily “with pride.”

The Cumann has recently been re-named as the Brownie Gorman – Patrick Phelan Sinn Féin Cumann and revived with a new board of Officers.

Laois Sinn Féin Senator Maria McCormack will be the main speaker at the event.

Before that, Independent Republican TD for Laois, Brian Stanley, will also lead an Easter Rising Commemoration in The Heath.

The event, organised by organisation Independent Republican’s Laois, will take place on at 11.30am, with assembly at The Heath National School (R32 XW40).

Attendees will then parade to the nearby Republican Monument. All are welcome to attend.
