Portlaoise College Students complete World of Work programme

Students from Portlaoise College recently completed their World of Work Programme in collaboration with Laois County Council and Business in the Community.

Throughout the programme, students gained valuable insight into the operations of Laois County Council.

They had the opportunity to meet council staff, who shared their career journeys and provided an overview of their roles within the organisation.

As part of their learning experience, students participated in a session with Ms. Lisa Doyle, Biodiversity Officer, focusing on sustainability topics such as food waste, cycling, transport, and eco-friendly practices at home.

They also explored the importance of biodiversity gardens and pollinator plants.

Inspired by this session, the students entered the annual Youth Engagement in Sustainability (YES) campaign, and we wish them the very best in the competition.

The programme also included a visit to Portlaoise fire station, where students engaged with members of the fire service.

They received a guided tour of the station, learned about fire safety, and got a close-up look at the specialised equipment used by firefighters.

The wrap session for the programme took place at Portlaoise College on April 1, where students presented their reflections on their experiences and learning outcomes.

This initiative provided students with invaluable exposure to real-world work environments while encouraging their interest in public service, sustainability, and community engagement.
