Deadline for registration for Setanta Hurling Programme draws near

The deadline for registration for the upcoming Setanta Hurling programme is approaching.

The Setanta Programme was originally begun back in 2005 and ran in the county for more than a decade with many of the current Laois senior hurlers having come through it.

Catering to all abilities, the Setanta Programme is aimed towards the development of all young hurlers in the county. The programme focus is to instill passion and pride in the young hurlers of Laois in providing preparation for future development squads.

Sessions consist of high-quality hurling coaching, drills, games and matches from both Laois GAA academy squad coaches and club coaches in Laois, in collaboration with the Coaching and Games department and Cumann na mBunscol.

The idea is that you identify the best and most suitable coaches for development squads and also have the players at a standard where they are very comfortable at the basic skills by the age of 14.

It was discontinued but in 2022, under the drive of a dedicated committee working with Brendan Phelan from The Harps, Setanta returned to cater for U-10 boys.

Now the programme is catering for four age groups and the Head of Games Development in Laois, Shane Keegan, is encouraging players to sign up.

He said: “The Setanta Hurling Programme is the first key corner stone in a young hurler’s county development journey.

“It gives every boy born between 2012 and 2015 an opportunity to take part in a development programme that will see them train with and against players from all over the county.

“The programme has the potential to be very beneficial for our young hurlers as it aims to help all players progress and improve over a 6-week period.”

U-10 (Boys born in 2015) and U-11 (Boys born in 2014) sessions will start on Tuesday April 29 and run for six weeks, finishing on Tuesday June 3.

These will take place in Clonad GAA from 6.15pm to 7.30pm.

While the U-12 (Boys born in 2013) and U-13 (Boys born in 2012) sessions will start on Saturday April 26 and run for six weeks, finishing on Saturday May 31.

These will also take place at Clonad GAA from 9.30am to 10.45am.
