Portlaoise College is running its #AndSheCycles campaign, in partnership with Laois Sports Partnership, as part of a Green-Schools initiative aimed at encouraging more girls to cycle to school.
With fewer than one in 250 girls in Ireland currently cycling to school, this campaign seeks to close the gender gap in cycling and promote sustainable, healthy travel options.
Five Green School students acted as #AndSheCycles ambassadors after taking part in an engaging ambassador training session – Emilia, Celina, Kinga, Aeon, and Róisín.
Since then, the group has been busy rolling out exciting events and awareness campaigns to promote cycling among girls.
Last week, the ambassadors led the TY girls on the Pink Cycle along the stunning Blueway in Vicarstown.
The event was a huge success, complete with a scenic route and a relaxing stop at Dilly Dally Coffee, where the cyclists were warmly welcomed by Linda and treated to some delicious refreshments.
Portlaoise College Principal Noel Daly praised the initiative, saying: “This campaign is about empowering young women to take ownership of their travel choices and supporting them with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to do so safely and sustainably.
“We are incredibly proud of our ambassadors and the leadership they have shown.”
Mr Daly also praised Ms Rowan, the driving force behind the campaign at the college, saying that she “has been instrumental in coordinating the events and that her enthusiasm and dedication have ensured the campaign’s success — a massive thank you to her for her leadership and passion”
The campaign also included a lively podcast episode hosted by the school’s Podcast Club, featuring a conversation between the ambassadors and Laois Environmental Awareness Officer, Sam McLeod.
That this was possible is in no small way thanks to Aoibhinn Grundy from the school’s Podcast Club, who produced and shared the sharing this inspiring discussion, which was shared on social media.
Additional highlights included a bike safety and repair workshop hosted by Green-Schools Ireland’s Travel Officer and the Big Travel Challenge in honour of International Women’s Day.
Pupils were encouraged to opt for more sustainable travel methods such as cycling, walking, carpooling, or using public transport.
The Green Schools Committee rewarded girls who cycled to school with spot prizes — congratulations to Michalina (2H), Janelle (1H), Chloe (2C), Cara (1A), and Ciara (2A) for their commitment.
“With brighter days ahead, the message is clear: Girls, let’s get pedalling.
“Let’s reduce our carbon footprint and inspire more students to choose greener ways to travel.”
