Clonad GAA organised a novel event recently when they held their inaugural Blitzchomórtas Iomána (Inter-Schools Hurling Blitz).
4th class children from five local primary schools played off a series of hurling games through the Irish language.
The event was a collaboration with five participating schools, The Heath NS, Scoil Bhride NS, Gaelscoil Portlaoise, The Rock NS and Educate Together.
While competitive, the games were played in a friendly and cordial manner with the emphasis on enjoyment and using ‘cupla focal’ as gaeilge.
Participation was also a strong theme, with all children enjoying equal playing time.
This event, the first of its kind in Laois, was organised by Clonad’s Oifigeach Cultúir agus Teanga, (Culture and Language Officer) Treasa Sheeran, with the aim of promoting both hurling and Irish.
Treasa thanked the schools who got involved and to the club members who came out to help.
She also acknowledged funding for the blitz which was received from the Joe McDonagh Irish Language Foundation
She said: “Táimíd an-sásta leis an gcomortas í Cluainfhada, agus tá súil againn go mbeidh sé ar siúl go bliaintúil anois.”
“(We are delighted with the success of this blitz in Clonad and look forward to ensuring that it becomes an annual event).”
