Well wishes as Laois school principal who ‘helped deliver wonderful modern campus’ has retirement function

Michael Regan presents Mike Carew with a painting of Knockbeg College on behalf of the Board of Management

Many colleagues, both past and present, gathered recently in the Seven Oaks Hotel for the retirement dinner of former Knockbeg College principal, Mike Carew.

A native of Tipperary, Carew spent ten years at the helm of the Laois college.

A spokesperson for Knockbeg explained the impact that Carew had on the school during his time there.

They said: “As we look back on the last decade, it’s clear that Mike has been an important figure in the continued growth and development of our school and its decorated history.

“We saw a commitment to providing for academic excellence, a focus on the wellbeing of students and staff alike, and a strong belief in the importance of fostering a supportive, inclusive environment.

“He also had to rise to the challenge of navigating the many changes our education system brings such as the reform of the Junior Cycle.”

Undoubtedly, the greatest challenge Mike faced was juggling the project management of the school’s new building development, while maintaining an educational institution, all on the same site.

This culminated when a brand new state of the art facility was unveiled in 2021.

They said: “Under his guidance, we’ve seen our school facilities develop into a wonderful modern campus on the banks of the Barrow, while still maintaining strong links with the past.

“From updating old classrooms alongside new classrooms; the redesigning of the old Long Corridor to the Colonnade, a new ASD Unit and our Gymnasium and Sports Hall.

“Recognizing the ever-changing needs of our students, Mike helped to introduce new subjects and broaden the school’s curriculum.

“Subjects such as Applied Technology at Junior Cycle and Technology, LCPE, and Politics & Society at Senior Cycle while still being able to keep the subjects that have always been provided for here in our school.

“The growth of our curriculum went hand in hand with the growth of our student body.

“The increase in numbers is a testament to not only the reputation of the school but the student experience Mike oversaw.

“A school environment that focused not only on academic achievement but also on emotional and social development.”

School patron, Bishop Nulty, and chairperson of the Board of Management, Michael Regan, also thanked Mike for his incredible service to Knockbeg College.

Mike was presented with many gifts on the night, including a painting of the school.

The spokesperson concluded: “All of the Knockbeg community would like to wish Mike, his wife Marian, daughter Ciara and son Conor, good health and happiness in his retirement.”
