Call made for road safety measures in Ballylinan village as people left ‘uncomfortable’ by speed

Ballylinan General New

People in the village of Ballylinan have been left ‘uncomfortable’ by the speed at which vehicles are passing through it.

So says Fianna Fail Councillor Padraig Fleming who has called on Laois County Council, in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, to act.

In a motion at the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District, Cllr Fleming requested improved pedestrian crossing facilities and slow down measures.

Cllr Fleming said: “People are flying in from the Kilkenny side and they pass three or four estates at serious speed.

“People have contacted me to say they are seriously uncomfortable and we need to do something.”

Engineer Paul McLoughlin said: “Road Design will engage with the TII and assess the current measures in place in Ballylinan Village from a Road Safety perspective.

“Any potential additional safety measures will be subject to a funding application to the TII.”

In a second motion, Cllr Fleming asked for ‘hot tarmacadam’ to be used to repair the road from The Swan to Newtown on the R430.

He said: “I am talking here specifically about the edge of the road at bad bends in the interest of health and safety.

“The edges have fallen away so to just fill it won’t be enough I’m afraid.”

In response, Philip McVeigh said the council had inspected this area and the repairs would be carried out in the coming weeks.

Finally, Cllr Fleming requested that Laois County Council cut back all the trees on the main arterial route in the Barrowvale Estate in Graiguecullen.

Engineer McVeigh said he would arrange to have these trees cut back.
