Breslin on target as Republic of Ireland U-17s advance in European Championship Qualifiers

Ciara Breslin Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland U-17 Women’s team have qualified for the next phase of the European Championships.

That is after they defeated Faroe Islands in a ten goal thriller following a dramatic encounter.

Laois striker Ciara Breslin opened the scoring as she latched onto a through ball in the 10th minute.

It looked like the Republic of Ireland would cruise to victory as a brace from Sophia Leonard and one from Beatrice Silickaite made it 4-0 after 23 minutes.

Incredibly though, Faroe Islands battled back and found themselves level 13 minutes into the second half.

Sara Benjaminsen scored twice with Karla Sjostein and Sigrid Hansdottir also on target.

But Ireland recovered as Ava Mullins and Anna Butler both scored to ensure they edged a crazy game.

After beating Lithuania in their opening game, Ireland now advance to the next stage as group winners.

This goal marks the latest chapter in the impressive career of the Clough teenager.

Ciara started out with Clover United before joining the Portlaoise AFC girls team.

Here, she was part of a team that went four years unbeaten – winning the U-14 National Cup in 2022 along with numerous Midlands League trophies.

In secondary school, Ciara won an All-Ireland U-20 ‘A’ title in 2024 with the Presentation SS Thurles along with Munster titles at U-15, U-17 and U-20 level.

She also won the Schools Interprovincials with Munster in 2022 and won her first international cap with Ireland at U-16 level last year against Switzerland in Spain.

Now with Treaty United, Ciara played with Wexford FC last year in the League Of Ireland where she won Most Improved Player.
