The death has occurred of Andy Molloy, a long-time resident of Mountmellick but a Portlaoise native, at the age of 85.
Mr Molloy was well-known through a range of community endeavours, including the Portlaoise Christmas Lights committee, The Rock National School, Mountmellick Traders Association and Portlaoise and Laois GAA.
In relatively recent years he was on the gate in O’Moore Park for big games, giving access to players, managers and officials as they arrived. He was also a regular presence around the old Portlaoise GAA grounds when their home was on Fr Browne Avenue.
In earlier years, in the 1970s and 1980s, Andy was a strong republican supporter.
Andy lived in Irishtown in Mountmellick and was formally from the Mountrath Road in Portlaoise.
He died peacefully on Monday, surrounded by his loving family, in his 86th year, following a brief illness.
He is predeceased by his parents Andrew and Josephine, brother Seamus and nephews Andrew and James.
Andy is survived by his brother John and sister Mary, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, daughters Dorothy and Yvonne.
Andy will be sadly missed his adoring wife Julie and their children Andrew, his wife Fiona, Jennifer and her husband John, Robert and Linda and her partner Vinnie, his grandchildren, Sean, Ronan, Saoirse, Lucy, Caolán and Róisín, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours and a huge circle of friends.
Reposing in Moloney’s Funeral Home in Mountmellick on Wednesday from 5pm. Recital of the rosary at 6.30pm. Removal from his home on Thursday at 10.20am to St Joseph’s church for requiem mass at 11am and burial afterwards in St Joseph’s cemetery. House strictly private at all times.
