Laois senior hurlers confirm new captain and vice-captains for 2025 season

The Laois senior hurlers have confirmed their captain and two vice-captains for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Rosenallis’ David Dooley has been bestowed with the honour of captain – succeeding Borris-Kilcotton’s Aaron Dunphy.

And he will be assisted by Ballinakill’s Cha Dwyer and Clough-Ballacolla’s Aidan Corby.

This is a bid deal for Dooley, who will only turn 22 this year and is certainly one of Laois’s youngest ever captains.

Dooley almost made his debut for Laois in 2021 but he was deemed too young.

After that, his sporting career headed down the rugby route where he played for Leinster and was capped for Ireland.

All of that meant that his debut didn’t actually come until the 2024 season under Willie Maher and now he is the captain.

Speaking about the announcement, manager Tommy Fitzgerald said: “Despite his relative young age, David is a natural leader.

“He leads by his example on and off the pitch. He will be ably assisted by Charlie and Aidan, two dedicated and committed Laois men.

“All three are excellent role models for other players on the panel, especially those younger players breaking through.

“We are very fortunate to have these three and others within the playing group to help drive standards and performance levels.”

Laois have played three games in the league thus far – losing to Offaly and Waterford but defeating Westmeath two weeks ago.

Their destiny will be determined over the next three weeks – starting with Sunday’s trip to Corrigan Park to take on Antrim at 1pm.

After that, Laois will host Carlow and then travel to Dublin to conclude their Division 1B campaign.
