The very first Mick Murray Memorial Road Run will take place on Sunday, March 16, with all funds raised going towards the Friends of Abbeyleix Hospital.
This Run is collectively organised by Ballyroan, Spink and Raheen vintage groups alongside the Murray family, led by Mr Murray’s daughters, Breda, Cathy, Carmel, Lorraine and Michelle.
“We’d love to see people decorate their cars and dress up themselves for St Patrick’s weekend,” a family representative said.
“St Patrick’s Day was special and important for Daddy, all his life, so that’s why we chose this time of year.
“Daddy was well-knkwn, and well liked, so we’re hoping for a big response.”
Mr Murray passed away on St Patrick’s Day 2019 and the family have been planning this celebration of his life ever since.
Originally from Colt, Mr Murray was a well-known figure in Ballyroan and a cornerstone of the community.
He was a founding member of Ballyroan Vintage Club in the early 1990’s and a regular face at Spink and Raheen Vintage rallies.
With a reputation that extended far and wide, the car-enthusiast was affectionately known as “the sand and gravel man.”
Mr Murray was a huge advocate for Friends of Abbeyleix Hospital and has spent many years helping them raise funds.
“Mick was a wonderful character who, along with his wife Brigid, was always willing to help out in the community far and wide, with Abbeyleix Hospital remaining paramount in his thoughts,” organisers said.
“Mick loved nothing more than preparing for St Patrick’s Day parades, so we appeal to everyone to bring your vehicles out in Mick’s memory.”
A cabaret will take place in Scully’s, Skies O’er, Ballyroan, at 9pm on the night with many spot prizes up for grabs in a raffle that will be a huge part of fundraising efforts.
