Stradbally is to receive a new bus shelter following a request for one from local Councillor Paschal McEvoy.
The Fianna Fail Councillor asked for one to be installed under a new scheme announced recently.
The response Paschal received from Diarmuid Donohoe Senior Engineer, Active Travel said: “The Council will include Stradbally for bus stop upgrade works as part of its 2025 programme.”
Cllr McEvoy said: “That is great news. We will have to have a chat with the relevant people about where best to put it.”
Supporting Cllr McEvoy, Cllr Aidan Mullins said that bus shelters should be in every village or town where there is a bus stop.
He said: “This is Third World stuff. We are expecting people to stand out in all sorts of weather. – it should be a basic right.”
In a second motion, Councillor McEvoy asked that the council put a Invalidity Parking Bay outside the Muse House at Main Street, Stradbally.
McEvoy got a response from Executive Engineer Conor Delaney: “Laois County Council will arrange to meet with the Elected Member on site to identify the area and to carry out an assessment for request.”
Cllr McEvoy added: “There us one person there that uses a wheelchair so this will greatly aid them.”
Finally, Cllr McEvoy requested that the council repair the school warning sign approaching the school from the Stradbally Road, Timahoe and also the speed indicator on the Portaloise Road, Stradbally.
Conor Delaney Executive Engineer responded: “Road Design will liaise with the Maintenance Contactors and get the required repairs carried out.”
It has subsequently been discovered that the indicator on the Portlaoise Road cannot be repaired and will have to be replaced.
