There was a momentous occasion for a Laois school this week as they became the county’s first Champion School at the School of Sanctuary Awards.
Ten students from Dunamase College, Portlaoise, proudly travelled to Dublin to receive their award.
The award ceremony took place at TU Dublin Grangegorman, where 10 schools from across Ireland gathered to celebrate their commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
After months of dedication and hard work, Dunamase College said it was “an honour” to be recognised for their efforts.
The students received their certificate and plaque from the Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain and Aishah Akorede of Dancing with the Stars fame.
“We are incredibly proud to be the first school in Laois to receive this esteemed award,” the school said.
“We are excited to support other local schools as they embark on their own paths to becoming Champion Schools.
“A heartfelt thank you to Tiffy, Sara, Sive and the entire School of Sanctuary Ireland team for organising an incredible day of celebration and reflection.
“We are especially proud of all our students on the Le Chéile committee and also our school community who have made this achievement possible by creating an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment in our school for all.”
Principal at Dunamase College, Ms Dympna Kelly, expressed her gratitude, saying: “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and compassion of our students and staff.
“It reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering a school where everyone feels valued and included.
“This award is not just a milestone but a stepping stone for future progress.”
