The contractor responsible for public lighting in County Laois “should be sacked” a local County Councillor has said.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Paddy Bracken made the statement at the February meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District this week.
Cllr Bracken said there is a “disgraceful” number of public lights that are currently not working across the county.
The Fianna Fáil Councillor highlighted significant outages in his own area of Mountmellick but said the problem is county-wide.
“The lighting service we’re getting in Laois is disgraceful; it’s beyond belief,” Cllr Bracken said.
“The company that has the contract should be sacked today; it’s disgraceful what they’re doing.
“There’s lights out all over Mountmellick, as there is in every town, since long before Christmas, and nothing is being done – it’s a pure disgrace.
“We’ve heard for the last 12 months that the contractor is short of staff, etc – they should be sacked.
“If this was going on in any other service in the Council we’d all be up in arms.”
The public lighting service in Laois has been a bone of contention with several Laois County Councillors in recent years.
The contractor in question is Killaree Lighting Services based in Kilkenny city.
They are responsible for public lighting in Laois as well as eight other Local Authorities.
