Local Councillor confirms beginning of payment under support schemes to Laois Tillage farmers

A total amount of close to €1.7 million is to be paid to farmers in Laois, local Councillor Conor Bergin has confirmed.

The Minister of Agriculture, food and the Marine, Martin Heydon recently confirmed that €32.4 million can be issued to farmers across the country through the scheme.

Laois has a total of 698 eligible herds for the scheme.

Bergin declared that “Last Spring, Government recognised the difficult position tillage and horticultural farmer found themselves in due to exceptionally poor weather and continued high input costs.”

The government managed to deliver on their commitment of €100 per hectare in order to support tillage and horticulture farmers as part of the 2025 budget.

Cllr Bergin stressed the “importance of the tillage and horticultural sectors in coordination with the Irish agri-food sector and County Laois”.

He also, would conclude with how important it was that “we wanted to ensure that supports were in place to assist farmers”.

Minister Heydon himself said that the payments can “be made on eligible tillage and horticulture crops that were declared” and that these payments will be coming into “farmers bank accounts in the coming days”.
