Laois senior footballers name captain and three vice-captains for 2025 season

The Laois senior footballers have named their captain and three vice-captains for the 2025 season.

Graiguecullen’s Brian Byrne has been bestowed with the honour of captaining his county for this year.

The versatile player, who can line out in defence or attack, was a key figure for Justin McNulty in 2024 after missing most of the 2023 season through injury.

His chance to lead the team comes after Crettyard’s Evan O’Carroll, captain last year, was ruled out through injury.

Taking to social media after the announcement, Byrne’s club Graiguecullen posted their congratulations.

They said: “We are overjoyed and proud of Brian Byrne being selected as Laois Senior Football Captain ahead of the 2025 season.

“Anyone who knows Brian, will know the hard-work, commitment and dedication he puts in to all he does, including his football.

“Brian continues to be an example and a huge role model for kids not just in Graiguecullen, but across the county of Laois.

“We wish Brian and his vice-captains; Killian, Kevin and Mark along with the team and management the very best of luck ahead of the 2025 season.”

Byrne will be assisted by Killeshin’s Killian Roche, Portlaoise’s Kevin Swayne and O’Dempsey’s Mark Barry.

Laois begin their Division 3 League campaign against Leitrim in Ballinamore this afternoon at 2.30pm.
