There is great excitement in Portlaoise’s basketball scene as the CBS’ U-19 team is getting ready for a historic clash in the All-Ireland final on Tuesday, January 21, at the National Basketball Arena.
This is a monumental moment for the team, who have been nothing short of dominant in both league and cup competitions throughout the season, remaining unbeaten.
Having been extremely competitive in the ‘A’ division of school basketball for a number of years, this year is their first ever attempt to claim the coveted All Ireland title.
There is great unity in the team as many have been teammates for many years at their local Portlaoise Panthers club and they have show remarkable drive, determination and skill throughout their campaign.
The team also features many players that have gone to represent Ireland at the international level in various competitions and levels.
Men’s National League head coach Jack Scully commented on his involvement in the school campaign this year whilst preparing for National Legaue Cup All-Ireland title this Saturday against Limerick Celtics.
He said: “We are very excited about next weeks final. It’s the first time in the schools history they have reached an U-19 ‘A’ All Ireland Final.”
In the other side of the competition Ballina pulled off a major upset over Eanna to set up a final with two teams with nothing to lose but everything to gain.
With their school community rallying behind them they will be hopeful to bring the school it’s first All Ireland glory at this level.
