U-17 Secondary Schools Soccer League Final

Heywood Community School were crowned U-17 Secondary School South Leinster Soccer league champions yesterday.

This was after a comprehensive victory over St Conleth’s of Newbridge in the final.

Led by Jay Brophy, who played for Waterford United in the League of Ireland last year, the Laois school were simply unstoppable.

Heywood had already faced the Newbridge school in the first round of this particular league where they were on the winning side of a 9-1 scoreline.

There was a slow start to the game with Heywood having the majority of the ball but it all changed after 15 minutes when Joey Dempsey had a great attempt at a half volley from the edge of the box which came off the post and striker Conor Headen was quickest to react.

Jay Brophy shortly followed up with a low free kick and then a screamer from outside the box into the top corner which gave Heywood a 3-0 lead at the break.

Newbridge had a bright start to the second half keeping the dominant side scoreless for 15 minutes, but Heywood added to their lead when a delightful cross from Conor Headen was headed home by Ryan Brennan.

Heywood drove on from the fourth goal with further efforts from Jay Brophy and Conor Headen.

There was also time for substitutes to get in on the act with Daniel Jones scoring twice and Liam O’Keeffe putting the icing on the cake.

Heywood were the dominant team throughout the campaign with big wins such as 9-1, 3-0 and 11-0 coming up to the final – thoroughly deserving their win.
