Martina Mulhall: More new CAO courses to explore including Food, Science, Film, Criminology and Global Politics

Many Leaving Cert students are still trying to figure out what courses to put on their CAO form.

Earlier in the year I highlighted new courses in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinary, PE, Home Economics and Technology teaching, Game Design, Software Development with Cyber Security, Digital Health and Infomatics, and Creative Writing.

Today’s article features additional new courses for 2025, including Building, Engineering, Food Business, Science, Film, Criminology and Global Politics.

US888 Built Environment (Common Entry)

Lots of students who are keen to work in the construction industry struggle to decide between courses in Civil Engineering Management, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, and Property Valuation/Management.

This one-year common entry course at TUS Athlone allows students to try out modules in all four areas before specialising in one of them for years two, three and four.

AU354 Electric Vehicle Engineering

This four year course at ATU Letterkenny has been designed to allow graduates to work in the Electric Vehicles industry, tying in with the Irish Government’s target to electrify one-third of the private car fleet by 2030, which represents about 850,000 vehicles.

The course will cover technology associated with a wide range of vehicles, including cars, public transport vehicles, goods vehicles, and specialist industrial vehicles.

DC160 Chemistry with Artificial Intelligence

This four-year science degree at DCU has been designed to cater for the student who wants to have real impact in areas such as drug design, climate change, fighting pollution, and smart materials development.

The first two years of the course will cover the fundamental basis of chemistry, programming, machine learning and the skills and theory needed to apply AI to chemistry.

Third year involves an INTRA work placement, and fourth year involves research in an area of applied chemistry.

MT929 Food Business

The BSc in Food Business being rolled out at MTU Cork is a four-year honours degree programme designed to equip graduates with all the practical skills and business knowledge to excel in the dynamic food industry sector.

Subjects, covering food and food science underpinned by sustainability, new and future technology, analytics, management, and leadership, will be delivered through a blend of academic and practical learning.

DL856 Film (Joint International Programme)

This is a three-year honours European Film degree programme which will be delivered across multiple European locations, Dublin, Lisbon, Brussels and Sofia.

The course covers both traditional filmmaking techniques and modern innovations, including cinema, television, immersive media, music videos, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and documentary production.

Practical learning, self-directed study, and international collaboration are emphasised throughout the programme.
A portfolio is required for admission into this course, so it must be listed on your CAO form by 5pm on February 1.

MH504 Criminology

This honours degree programme being offered at Maynooth University for the first time in September 2025 can be completed in three years with the option of adding on an additional year of studying abroad.

Up until now the only university in the Republic of offering the opportunity to study Criminology as a single major was University College Cork (UCC).

LM030 Global Politics

This four-year course at University of Limerick (UL) is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and critical skills needed to understand Irish, EU and global political systems, globalisation, international relations and global development.

Graduates will be poised for careers in the public sector and private organisations in a variety of positions including policy-related roles, communications and political advising.

These new courses are well worth exploring. When doing so make sure to look closely at the module descriptors for all years of the course, not just first year.

Always check if you have the required Leaving Cert subjects – particularly a third language and a laboratory science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physics with Chemistry, Agricultural Science).
