A new Chief Executive of Laois County Council is set to be appointed, with former Director of Services Michael Rainey to be rubber-stamped for the position next week.
Mr Rainey’s name was put to a meeting of Council’s CPG group this week and will now go before a full in-committee meeting of councillors for final approval this coming Monday.
A native of county Louth, Mr Rainey will fill the position left vacant by John Mulholland’s retirement earlier this year. The role had been filled on an interim basis by Simon Walton, though he didn’t seek the job permanently going forward.
Michael Rainey began working in Laois County Council in 2001 and though he moved to Kildare for a short period, he returned to County Hall in 2005 where he filled a variety of roles until 2019.
At the time of his departure from Laois he was one of the Directors of Services, one of the key management roles in the council just below the Chief Executive.
He moved to Carlow County Council to take on a new role in 2019 and left Laois with the considerable praise of the councillors at the time ringing in his ears.
In recent times he has been acting as the Chief Executive in Carlow in an interim basis.
Michael lives near Ballyadams with his wife Denise, who has also held senior roles in Laois County Council in the Business Support Unit and currently is Town Regeneration Officer, and their young family.
