A Laois farmer is celebrating this week after selling a horse at the sales in Newmarket in England for €700,000.
John ‘Baba’ Keegan, who hails from Ballyroan, is also a small time horse breeder that owns Milestream Stud.
2 – Laois man awarded with the Volunteer Manager of the Year award
Laois man Damien Dollard was recently honoured with the Volunteer Manager of the Year award at the national Volunteer Ireland Awards.
The awards, which took place in Dublin on Sunday December 8, celebrate Ireland’s outstanding volunteers and volunteer managers.

The Laois minor football panel has been named ahead of the 2025 season.
Manager John Larkin has confirmed a 35-player panel who will represent Laois next year.

Paddy Buggy is to be co-opted unopposed at a Fine Gael party convention this Sunday meaning he’ll be able to take his place at Monday’s full council meeting.
5 – Death occurs of Fionán Bracken, well renowned Portlaoise hotelier
The death has taken place of Fionán Bracken from Portlaoise, a hugely popular and highly-respected business man in the town.
In his 97th year, Fionán was the former owner of the County Hotel on Main Street in Portlaoise as well Kelly’s Hotel, where Jeremiah Grant’s now stands.
6 – Deep sadness as tribute paid following the unexpected passing of Clonaslee man Danny McRedmond
There was shock and deep sadness in Clonaslee over the weekend following the unexpected passing of Danny McRedmond.
Mr McRedmond passed away on Saturday December 7 and was a hugely popular figure in his native Clonaslee.
7 – Calls made again for the establishment of additional GAA club in Portlaoise
A report to tonight’s Laois GAA annual convention will again outline suggestions for the establishment of an extra club in Portlaoise.
Laois GAA appointed Adrienne McCarthy from Portarlington as Demographics Officer earlier this year and her committee have put together a detailed 36-page report which has been circulated to clubs ahead of the convention.
8 – Sadness in Arles and Ballickmoyler as local publican passes away six months after his wife
There is sadness in the small rural communities of Arles and Ballickmoyler following the passing of Tony O’Kelly.
He is the popular local publican whose family have run O’Kelly’s pub for a long number of years.
