The Portlaoise Singers are back again for their 48th year, with their latest concert set for Sunday, December 15, at 8pm in St Peter’s Church of Ireland.
This year, the Singers will be joined by harpist Triona Marshall, who has just finished her 27th tour with renowned band, The Chieftains.
The concert will feature an array of popular Christmas music, sang in four- and five-part arrangements .
The choir have won first prizes at Cork International, France and Wales; and have appeared on RTE TV and radio on multiple occasions.
One of the group’s highlight achievements includes a performance at the Royal Albert hall in London.
This year, the Portlaoise Singers will be joined by award winning soloists Caoimhe Fitzpatrick and Sophie MacNamara.
The pipe organ will be played by Donal Hennessy, who holds a first class honours degree in organ performance.
Tickets are €10 euro are available at Brown’s Gala, Church View, at Bosco’s Gala, Grattan Street, and also at the door on the night.
The choir was started in 1975 as part of a proposed passion play.
The play did not happen but the choir stayed together and went from strength to strength, winning many awards and performing all over with members from right across County Laois.
Their first concert was in 1976 in the old Killeshin Hotel.
