Laois is set to see the return of a much maligned bus service between the county and neighbouring Kildare.
The bus service in question is for Route 816 connecting Portarlington with Monasterevin.
Independent County Councillor in the area, Aidan Mullins, said this is “good news for local commuters who were devastated to lose the bus services between Portarlington and Monasterevin.
“Many users of the service needed it to get to work and will be relieved to hear this.”
In a statement on the matter, the National Transport Authority (NTA) said:
“Following the withdrawal of the service, the NTA indicated it was to assess this route corridor to determine whether a Public Service Obligation (PSO) now exists following this withdrawal.
“We have now completed our assessment of this corridor to determine whether a Public Service Obligation is required.
“Our assessment has concluded that a Public Service Obligation does exist.
“As such, the NTA is now working on proposals to provide bus services between Portarlington and Monasterevin.”
