Two primary school students received a Civic Reception from Laois County Council last week.
Tomas Ramsbottom and Emma Burke of Timahoe National School were the guests of honour in the council chamber.
They were joined by their families, teachers and friends for a very special event.
This was organised because back in March, Tomas and Emma were crowned All-Ireland champions at the Intel Mini Scientist Exhibition.
The pair qualified for the Grand Final after winning at the regional finals the previous December with their project entitled ‘Perfectly Paced’.
The project is all about pacemakers and looks at how they can be charged by using wireless technology and kinetic energy.
The inspiration for the project came about due to the fact that Tomás has a pacemaker since he was a baby.
Pacemaker batteries need to be changed every 7 to 10 years so if Tomás lives until he is 80, he will have to undergo another 10 major operations.
The children carried out extensive research and spoke with wireless technology experts in Silicone Valley to design a suitable alternative.
The Grand Final consisted of the top 26 projects across the country and the Timahoe children’s project came out on top.
This was a monumental achievement for the children considering 6,800 children from across the country took part in the competition this year.
Photographer Michael Scully was present in the Chamber last week and captured some great images.
