Long-serving Laois footballer Kieran Lillis has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Portlaoise man, who operated on almost every line of the field for Laois, announced the news on social media today.

Lillis made his championship debut for Laois back in 2011 against Longford.

He played under seven different Laois managers – Justin McNulty twice, Tomas O Flatharta, Mick Lillis (his dad), Peter Creedon, John Sugrue, Mike Quirke and Billy Sheehan.

He also captained the county between 2020 and 2022. Lillis finishes his career with two Division 4 league titles (2024 and 2018) and a Leinster final appearance in 2018.

Lillis said: “Although it ended in a loss, ending an amazing 20-year journey in the blue and white—from starting at age 14 to finishing in HQ—isn’t a bad way to bow out.

“I’m incredibly grateful to my family, my club, my teammates, mentors, and the supporters who have been there for me every step of the way.

“Laois, Laois, Laois.”

Portlaoise chairman Eamon Fennelly paid tribute to Lillis following  his announcement.

He said: “Just to say to Kieran, well done on representing yourself, your family, and your club so honourably at all times over the years.

“You were a leader on and off the field, as you continue to be with Portlaoise, and you can be very proud of the service you gave to Laois.

“We wish you well following retirement from the intercounty scene and we look forward to seeing you play for your beloved club for many more years.
