Leinster Women’s Division 5/6 Cup Round 1

Laois Hockey Club travelled to Glasnevin, Dublin on Saturday where they beat Botanic HC in the first round of the Leinster Division 5/6 Cup.

Goals from Yvonne Hargroves in the first half and a another from Gloria Lewis in the second half were enough to secure the win.

Laois made a strong start to the game with plenty of attacking play and numerous shots on goal in the first quarter.

This continued in the second quarter with Hargroves finding the backboard shortly before half time to give Laois a 1-0 lead at the interval.

The Glasnevin club came back fighting in the second half with some good attacks in an attempt to even the score.

However, the Laois defence held strong with some good saves by goalkeeper Marina Packer.

Laois, not to be deterred, responded well with Holly Olgivie finding a Botanic foot in the circle to win a penalty corner for Laois.

A lovely slip from centre forward Emma Brophy found Lewis free on the right who fired it in the goal to make it 2-0.

With Botanic losing their goalkeeper to injury seven minutes before full time, Laois were keen to increase their lead.

However, Botanic held strong and the game finished 2-0 to Laois.

Laois’ cup journey will continue on Saturday, November 23, when they play UCD in Loreto, Kilkenny.
