News in Brief: Power Up grants, Coláiste Íosagáin’s trip to Dublin and Laois volunteers

Coláiste Íosagáin’s Green Schools Committee visit Dáil Eireann and Seanad Eireann

The Green Schools Committee of Coláiste Íosagáin Portarlington recently visited parliament buildings in Dublin, where they toured both Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann.

The 17 students were welcomed to Leinster House by Senator Pippa Hackett, Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity.

“The innovative ideas, the energy, and the sheer enthusiasm and passion that exude from this group of young adults is greatly encouraging,” Minister Hackett said.

“There is no doubt that each of them have the potential to make significant impacts on Irish society, in the field of climate action and far beyond it.”

Registration open for business Power Up grants

A €170 million package for Power Up grants has been announced and registrations are now open.

Retail and Hospitality businesses who received the second Increased Cost of Business (ICB) payment can register for the €4,000 one-off grant.

Laois County Council will be emailing businesses who received a second payment under the ICB to inform them of their potential eligibility for the €4,000 Power Up grant, alongside instructions of how to register.

The closing date for registrations is November 8, so that gives owners two weeks to register.

Volunteering at Balladine NeighbourWood Project

Laois Volunteer Centre’s corporate volunteer programme facilitates local business organisations in providing group volunteering opportunities for their employees.

Recently, AIB availed of this opportunity, with 14 employees taking up garden shears to clip grass and weeds in Gort na Noir, Abbeyleix.

Laois Volunteer Centre organised this innovative environmental project in conjunction with The Balladine NeighbourWood Project, Abbeyleix.

Mark Clancy, Abbeyleix Tidy Towns said “We are incredibly grateful to the staff from Laois Volunteer Centre and the dedicated group of volunteers from AIB for their hard work in helping to nurture our NeighbourWood in Abbeyleix.

“We also want to extend our thanks to Wellington, Anderson, and the generous team at Mueller and O’Connell for providing pizza to fuel the volunteers.

“It’s community efforts like these that strengthen our shared vision for a greener and more sustainable future.”

Mr Niall Grogan, Regional Director of AIB’s Mid East Region, said: “We all felt proud to help an organisation like Abbeyleix Tidy Towns which does fantastic work for the local community.”
