Road safety audit to be carried out near Laois GAA club following numerous traffic accidents

A road safety audit is to be carried out near a Laois GAA club grounds following numerous recent accidents on the road.

The matter was raised by Councillor John Joe Fennelly who asked that Laois County Council carry out an audit on the R430 at the junction of Spink GAA Club.

The Fianna Fáil councillor was speaking at the October meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District earlier this week.

“The problem is coming from the Carlow side,” Cllr Fennelly said.

“The residents on tge other side of the road have had their pier hit on at least three occasions, one as recently as a couple of weeks ago and the car was practically a write-off.”

Fine Gael Councillors Barry Walsh and Willie Aird added their support to the proposal.

Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer at Portlaoise Municipal District’s Roads Office, said he would meet with the Fianna Fáil councillor on site “to examine the location and progress to carrying a Road Safety Audit as appropriate.”

Cllr Fennelly then called for pull-in areas to be installed on the Lower Ballymullen Road, Abbeyleix to facilitate local residents who walk the road.

“There’s a lot of houses on that road now, and a quarry and there’s lot of heavy goods vehicles there on a daily basis,” the Fianna Fáil councillor said.

Mr Wilkinson said he would meet with Cllr Fennelly on “to examine the location for the installation of a passing bay.”

Cllr Fennelly concluded by requesting that the kerbing be replaced in front of Askbrook Housing Estate, Rathmoyle.

Mr Wilkinson again responded, saying the Municipal District woukd “make arrngement to carry out repairs” to the footpath.
