A meeting has been called with the officials of Bord na Mona to discuss the possibility of opening the proposed O’Moore Way in Portlaoise.
The proposed cycle and walkway would follow the old railway line linking Cashel Bog, Cul na Móna and Ross Bog.
Councillor Willie Aird broached the subject at the October meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District this week.
The Fine Gael councillor noted that this would in no way affect turf banks at the three bogs.
Local TD Brian Stanley had previously raised the matter at a meeting with Bord na Mona in April.
Mr Paul McLoughlin, Acting Director of Services, confirmed Laois County Council woukd write to Bord na Mona seeking a meeting.
Cllr Aird went on to ask that the Portlaoise Municipal District “arrange for the pruning of the trees where necessary in various estates around the town.”
Mr McLoughlin said the MD will arrange for the pruning “on a prioritised basis” within respective estates in the charge of the Local Authority.
“Given the frequency of requests which is a as a result of the number of maturing estates in Portlaoise town, provision will have to be made for an appropriate budget for such works as part on the budgetary process for 2025 and beyond,” he added.
Cllr Aird concluded by asking that, “in the interest of health of safety for road users,” the Municipal District pipe the “very deep drain” on the Ballydavis Road.
Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer at Portlaoise Municipal District’s Roads Office, said the location would be included in an application for Drainage Works funding for 2025.
