103 not out and going for a seventh county medal – Rathdowney-Errill’s John Purcell

Sunday will be a special day for everyone in Rathdowney and Errill as they will go for their seventh county title since their amalgamation in 2005.

While hundreds of players have represented the club over the last 19 years, only two of the current starting 15 have been there since the start.

Corner back John Purcell and full back Joe Fitzpatrick both boast that accolade and are set to make their 104th appearance for the club in the final.

Speaking on the Laois Hurling Podcast ahead of the final, John Purcell spoke about the love he has for the game.

He said: “I have missed some matches with injuries and being tied up in Australia and America.

“Myself and Joe Fitzpatrick are on the same number of appearances.

“The two of us were lucky that there was a good strong bunch that drove on the club and kept going.

“We are eager to commit every year and offer something and keep going.”

Looking back on the year so far, Purcell says that the victory over Abbeyleix in the semi final was huge.

He said: “It was a massive game for us our squad and the club in general. We had to get over the line.

“We probably felt in the past few years we let ourselves down, so we were really foucused on getting over the line and hopefully we can compete again for the final.

“Abbleyix have proven themselves to be up with the best in Laois and deserve full respect when we play them so we were delighted to get over the line.

“We never felt we were out of it after conceding some goals but dug deep again and finished it off.”
