‘Mindless vandalism’ caused at hallowed place of worship in Portlaoise

An act described as “mindless vandalism” occurred this week in Portlaoise, as Marian Shrine was attacked and defaced.

The incident occurred on some time between Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The monument has held pride of place in Portlaoise for generations and is celebrating the 70th anniversary of its erection.

Mr John O’Neill, a member of the Marian Shrine Committee, spoke with LaoisToday, bemoaning the horrible attack.

“To defile a monument that’s been there since 1954; it was disgraceful,” he said.

“It’s being looked after and cared for, and people worship at it.

“The Blessed Virgin is utilised by several different people – it’s a place of worship.”

The Committee invested a lot of money over recent years to maintain and improve the shrine for the good of the community.

“People find this upsetting, especially older people,” Mr O’Neill said.

“We don’t know who did it or what the motives were behind it – it just seems like mindless vandalism to be honest.”
