Abbeyleix native Steven Reilly remembers all too well the trauma of his son Jude’s diagnosis with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
“It was June 10 last. I don’t think you get over it. The diagnosis just burned in my head. In a second, your life is changed,” he said.
Jude who was only two-years-and-two-months when he was diagnosed, is now enjoying life with his family at home.

There was a dark cloud of sadness over Stradbally last weekend as one of its much loved sons was laid to rest.
Only aged in his early 40s, Robbie Moore passed away last Thursday having battled with sickness over the past couple of years.
3 – ‘Find your voice and use it’ says Laois children’s author as he launches fourth book
It may be a long way from the Champs-Élysées to Killeen but Brendan McDonald has brought the two together in writing and publishing his fourth children’s book set on a Laois farm, while living and working in Paris.
The book was launched in Killeen Hall on Saturday with a big crowd in attendance during the day.
4 – In Pictures: Glorious sunshine, big crowds and mighty craic at Day 1 of the Ploughing Championship
It was less mud and wellies but more glorious sunshine and sunglasses as the National Ploughing Championships got underway yesterday.
The day did not disappoint as there were a huge number of 75,500 attendees. This represents an increase of 9,250 on last year’s figure of 66,250.
With clear blue skies throughout the day, shoppers and agricultural enthusiasts joined celebrities and politicians to experience a great day out for all the family.
5 – Portlaoise woman to represent Laois at Miss Universe Ireland 2024
Veronica Campelo from Portlaoise has been chosen to represent Laois at Miss Universe Ireland 2024, which takes place this coming weekend at the Fairways Hotel, Dundalk.
Veronica, 40, has a business degree, works in retail and is also an actress and model.
6 – Goal and assist for Laois winger as UCD make winning start in UEFA Youth League
The UEFA Youth League got underway last night and a young Laois man made a scintillating start.
Emo’s Roy Lawlor was in action for for UCD and finished the game with a goal and an assist from the left wing.
7 – New car sales down almost 10% in Laois as Government urged to show support for electric car industry
The number of new car sales in Laois fell in August, down almost 10% compared to the same month in 2023, according to figures released by the Society for the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
85 new cars were recorded as sold here in August compared to the 93 sold 12 months ago.
After a 6.5% rise in July, a fall of 8.6% in August will be cause for concern as car sales tend to decline later in the year.

9 – Success for Laois owner as Killeaney Bear claims glory at the races in Cork
There was Laois success at the racecourse in Cork last week as Killeaney Bear claimed glory.
The horse is owned by Shanahoe native Charlie Kerwin and claimed the €6,900 first prize at the Mallow track.
