Could we sees bands perform and live Podcasts take place on lower Main Street in Portlaoise in the future?
Well, this is a proposal that has been put forward by Independent Councillor Tommy Mulligan at a meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District recently.
Speaking at the meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District on Wendesday, Cllr Mulligan has requested that a bandstand by erected.
He asked that this be carried out as part of the Urban Regeneration Development Fund to offer the opportunity for ‘public performances and further enhance the ambiance and atmosphere of the area’.
Cllr Mulligan said: “There is a strong music scene in Laois and this is a great opportunity to give bands or artists the chance to perform.
“If the street was pedestrianized, there could be extra seating supplied and it could also be a venue for live podcasts which have become very popular too.
“Laois County Council could set up a booking system where people could get slots.”
In response, Director of Services Paul McLoughlin said that this would be considered.
He said: “Under Round 2 of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, public realm enhancements will be undertaken along Main Street in Portlaoise.
“In the coming weeks, Laois County Council will be tendering for the appointment of a design team to develop enhancement proposals.
“The provision of a space and facilities for performances will be considered as part of enhancement proposals.”
