The 2024 National Ploughing Championships are just around the corner and as always, the weather for the event is a hot topic.

This year’s event will return to Ratheniska from Tuesday to Thursday, September 17 to 19, with temperatures forecast in the high teens.

The news comes from the now famous Carlow Weather page found on Twitter (X), who have garnered a reputation for reliable forecasts over the past few years.

In a tweet this morning, Carlow Weather said there “could be more need for sunglasses than wellies for (the) Ploughing next week.”

Pictures accompanying the post suggest temperatures ranging from 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, with a low probability of rain.

The post can be found here.

It would make a pleasant change for the Ploughing Championships, which have been plagued by bad weather in recent years.

Day 1 of the event was a wash-out last year, reducing the fields of Ratheniska to a canvas of muck, mud and puddles for the remainder of the event.

66,250 undeterred visitors descended on Ratheniska that day and a similar number is expected next week.

Hopefully Carlow Weather are on the ball and the sunglasses and sun cream will be more useful than wellies and umbrellas.
