Portlaoise Institute hosted its annual graduation ceremony at the Killeshin Hotel, celebrating the achievements of students from the 2023/24 academic year.
The event marked a proud moment for graduates, their families, and the institute’s staff, who gathered to honour the hard work and dedication demonstrated throughout the year.
Because of the increased number of students at Portlaoise Institute, two Graduation Ceremonies had to be held, one for Humanities students and another for all other students.
The event commenced with an opening address from the Institute’s Principal, Keith McClearn, where he reflected on some of the developments that have enhanced the educational experience for students over the last year.
The expansion into a second Humanities campus, three newly developed state-of-the-art computer classrooms and the establishment of the first-degree programmes to be offered in Laois.
He said: “Our biggest achievement was, you our students, who are sitting here tonight.
“Last year over 500 students studied at Portlaoise Institute, this included full and part-time students, evening students, tertiary students, apprenticeships and community education programmes.”
Adding to the significance of the event, past student Orlagh McElhannon who started her Beauty career in Portlaoise Institute gave a speech to the Graduates.
Her passion for the beauty industry helped her secure a position in the Osprey Hotel and Spa in Naas and more recently she has moved to working in the Killenard Golf and Spa resort.
Throughout the event, numerous students were recognised for their exceptional achievements.
Student of the Year Awards were presented to students who had demonstrated remarkable academic prowess, and a positive attitude to their studies.
Principal, Keith McClearn finished the ceremony with a message to the Graduates.
He said: “On behalf of everyone at Portlaoise Institute, I want to say how incredibly proud we are of all you have achieved.
“We know that you will continue to make us proud as you take the next steps in your journey.
“Go out into the world with confidence, curiosity, and courage, and never forget that you have the power to shape your own future.”
