Energy Awareness Week was successfully launched in Laois with organisers saying it ‘sparked enthusiasm throughout the community for sustainable energy practices’.
The event, hosted by Aisling O’Rourke, presenter of Midlands 103’s Let’s Go Green Show, featured interviews with leading industry experts.
These included Liam Donohue from Retrokit, John Kelly, Director of the Mount Lucas Centre, LOETB, Laurence O’Reilly from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), and Claire Irwin, Quantity Surveyor from RTÉ’s Room to Improve.
The opening ceremony was led by Cathaoirleach Padraig Flemming, who emphasised the importance of the initiative.
He said: “Energy Awareness Week provides a unique opportunity for all community members to learn practical steps they can take to support these goals.”
Donal Brennan, Director of Services at Laois County Council, echoed this sentiment.
He said: “Energy Awareness Week focuses on empowering the community with knowledge and tools to enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions.
“It aims to make a positive impact in daily life, benefiting both homes and businesses in their sustainability efforts.”
The evening’s refreshments were provided by FoodCloud, an organisation dedicated to reducing food waste by redistributing surplus food to charities.
By rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, FoodCloud helps lower carbon emissions linked to food production and disposal, making it a shining example of sustainable practice.
The food offering was powered by Wattsun batteries, charged via solar panels, further showcasing how renewable energy can be integrated into everyday life.
This launch marks the beginning of a week-long series of events aimed at raising awareness of energy efficiency and sustainability.
The people of Portlaoise have embraced the initiative with enthusiasm, participating in discussions, workshops, and other activities that will inspire lasting change.
The NZEB and Retrokit Mobile Training Rig was stationed at the upper car park of the Laois Shopping Centre Monday to Friday.
